The very modern sweep of this '59 Biscayne's rear quarter panels and trunk tells clearly, cleanly one might say, of the transfer from the Harley Earl era of GM design, to that of Bill Mitchell.
To say this was dramatic would be an understatement.
When reviewing the spy shots of Virgil Exner's new '57 Chryslers, and laughing at the fins, the GM designers suddenly realized Exner had introduced the1960s: lower body line, larger glass green house roofs, oh and some fins.
The result was that the 1958 Chevy was the only one year model ever made and sold by GM. The entire late Fifties product line was scrapped and the entire new design line, across every division, appeared for1959.
A clean sweep indeed.
