A new decade brought with it a new idea. Rather than attach miscellaneous aero appliances to the rounded central shape of an F1 car, Chapman and Maurice Philippe decided to transform the entire central body into a flat wedged plane aero device. The wedge shape required another innovation, moving the radiators to the side pods. Thus creating the Lotus 72, for the 1970 F1 season.
Then over at McLaren Gordon Coppuck gave his signature to the wedge concept for 1971. This design came across the pond and under Penske management won at Pocono, Michigan, with Revson coming in 2nd at Indy.

For 1972 Dan and Roman Slobodynskyj took the wedge to heart, and the circle tracks and road courses of the States. In the process providing the fastest car for the 1972 season. And the most successful and popular privateer Eagle in the company’s storied career.
