The almost comical simplicity of this shot illustrates that the engineers of those 254.5 cubic-inch L-head inline straight-8 Hudson engines felt they needed little driver monitoring. There was a certain irony to this as this engine was to go on to set 38 speed and endurance records the year this 74 Deluxe was built. I guess their confidence was such that they figured the driver just needed to know how fast they were going, if there was enough gas to get them there and what time it was.
